Donovan: Piped Up for Advancement

“My Grandfather was a member of Local 412 for years,” recalls Donovan. “After graduating from high school, I always thought I’d follow in his footsteps because it interested me.” Donovan always had an idea that he would end up in some kind of trade because he always liked to build things and do things with his hands. After moving from Colorado, he followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and got involved with a union apprenticeship program within a couple of months of his arrival in New Mexico. With two years of experience in piping and draining with an independent shop, he was attracted by the professionalism and value that came along with participating in a union apprenticeship program.
“I joined the apprenticeship program and they paid for me to go to school. I didn’t have that kind of money to pay for my education. They also paid me to work and provided benefits.” The pay is a lot better now and he will always have benefits as a part of his union membership. After completing the apprenticeship program, he is now a certified Journeyman, able to work anywhere in the United States. He also helps those in the apprenticeship program to build their skills and understand their endless career opportunities. “This was the best of both worlds. Today, I have a degree, a journeyman certificate and a job that I really enjoy.”
