“Growing up, I always enjoyed building things,” says Tyson. The oldest of three brothers, he enjoyed learning but school instruction wasn’t a good fit with his ability to quickly adapt and decipher any situation. Working odd jobs in construction and in the service industry, Tyson joined a local plumbing company. He learned about the trade and joined the Union apprenticeship program. Paid on-the-job training, full benefits and training all covered by the Union helped to provide the right kind of environment where Tyson could succeed. He earned his GED and his Journeyman certification.
“Joining the shop and the union really saved me,” says Tyson. Coming from a family of non-union construction workers, his family never questions his decision to join the union because they all recognize that it is a great deal. “It sounded too good to be true. The pay is great and it has nice benefits. Plus, I get to weld and build things in Albuquerque that will last a lot longer than me.” Looking ahead, Tyson wants to eventually give back to others like him and lay a foundation of success by setting-up and running his own plumbing company in the future.
